Safehaven Marine have launched ‘Northeast Pilot’ III, an ‘all weather capable’ 15m Interceptor 48 Pilot built for the North East pilots at Newport, Rhode Island in the USA. Northeast Pilot III has an operational speed of 25kts powered by Cummins X15 engines, Twin disc gearboxes and a 25kw Northern lights generator.

She has been specifically built for the cold conditions the port can experience in winter, as such has an electrically heated deck and windows, together with hot water heated handrails and interior heating. For summer months 27,000btu of air conditioning ensure an all year round comfortable environment for her pilots and crew. Her central helm position offers panoramic vision all round and above, and offers one of the best helming positions, totally focused on providing the operator with the maximum comfort and control of the vessel, especially during the often challenging conditions a pilot vessel operates in.

Protected from the rigours of pilotage with an Ocean 3 fender system, and with pilot safety covered by an electrically operated version of Safehaven’s MOB recovery system operational efficiency and pilot safety were prime considerations during her design stage with her pilots and crew. North East Pilot III accommodates 6 pilots on shock mitigation seating in a very comfortable main cabin, with live aboard facilities provided in her spacious forward accommodation area.

North East Pilot III represents Safehaven’s 66th Pilot boat and our second for the USA following Miami delivered to the Biscayne Bay Pilots in Florida earlier this year.

Sea trials during ‘Storm Bram’ with winds of Storm Force 11 and heavy breaking waves proved a good test for her seakeeping abilities, especially her stability where she recovered nicely from a hard knock down to 90 degrees, proving again the excellent seakeeping abilities of the Interceptor 48 Pilot boat.

This is an impressive example of modern marine engineering designed specifically for safety, comfort, and performance in demanding weather conditions. Features like heated decks, panoramic helm visibility, and year-round climate control show how carefully the vessel was built to support pilots operating in challenging environments. The focus on operator comfort and reliability is especially important for all-weather maritime operations.
