On the 18th May a storm hit
Southern Ireland
, Force 10 with 60kts winds and 10m seas. We took our
Pilot boat out in to this maelstrom to demonstrate her outstanding sea keeping
abilities and recorded it on video. Here are some of the most amazing action
photos ever taken.
Conditions during the trials were extreme, with the
boat completely engulfed by waves on several occasions, we deliberately ran her
beam on to big breaking seas where she was hit by the full force of the breaking
wave to demonstrate her stability, and it was truly impressive to watch how
little she was heeled over, her 17,000kg displacement helping here. In to
the seas at a reduced speed of 12kts she was able to ride the breakers, with
only the biggest boarding her green to break over the cabin, as can be seen in
the photo sequence below. Running down wind she was able to go full speed,
recording surfing speeds of well over 28kts, and even in the worst waves she
never badly stuffed her bow, her flare and buoyancy always raising over the
