SAFEHAVEN MARINE NEWSLETTER SUMMER 2006

New WILDCAT 40 for 2006

This summer will see a number of changes to our Wildcat range. A one piece mould will be cast which will significantly speed up the production process. At the same time the hulls length will be increased to a full moulded 40ft. This will give much greater aft cockpit space on all models in the Wildcat range. In addition we will be offering an under 10m version, which, with the introduction of a blank inserted into the mould allow her to be moulded at various lengths. The increase in W/L length on the 40ft version will give only improvements in the Wildcats already fabulous seakeeping by allowing her to bridge bigger ocean swells.

Performance and powering requirements are expected to be similar to the 36ft hull. The design and GA for the new 40ft 'motor yacht version can be seen below. An Angling / Dive version is also going to be available using the standard Island wheelhouse or an extended version. Below is a picture of the first hull being built, from this a one piece mould will be taken.

The new 2006 model INTERCEPTOR 37  'GENESIS'

Development is well advanced on our replacement for the old Interceptor 38 model. An all new Interceptor 37 called the 'Genesis' will commence production this summer. Closely based on our hugely successful Interceptor 42’s hull, but incorporating a number of refinements to provide even higher levels of performance and seakeeping. Her beam is a wide 3.5m moulded, (12ft 4” overall) just 10" short of the 42’s beam, and much wider than the old 38’s, providing her with high levels of both static and dynamic stability. With a GM of 1.5m she has high reserves of stability over an anticipated large displacement range, as indeed she will form the basis for a new 37’ft Pilot Boat to be offered alongside the current Interceptor 42 ‘Pilot Boat’. Her waterline entry has been made finer at 50 degrees to cut through waves even better, and she has the same midships deadrise of 22 degress meaning she will not slam in large waves. And of course her steeply raked stem and cutaway forefoot means she will have the same excellent handling in following seas. A new keel design offering static and dynamic stability and full protection for the stern gear, but with less wetted area than the conventional full length keel, to provide more speed and better fuel economy, an important consideration with todays rising fuel costs. Her unique double chine hull design means she will be an exceptionally dry boat.

We have chosen an Island Wheelhouse design similar to the 28's for her superstructure, taking advantage of her wide beam, it provides loads of gunwale space for angling and a large deck area, but still provides good accommodation space, which can be varied to suit her intended role. Both long and short cabin versions will be available.

Her aft deck will be flush, and accommodate either single or twin engine options. The chosen engine option on the first boat being Caterpillars new C9 at 575hp, but with options from a Caterpillar 3126 350hp engine in single installations up to a pair of 440hp Yanmar’s for maximum performance of over 30kts. Overall the new model will combine excellent seakeeping and performance with Safehaven’s now expected style and graceful looks, in a smaller, more compact vessel ideally suited for commercial charter work, or recreational use.

Work is well underway on her superstructure mould now.

The first hull has now been completed and her fine lines can now be appreciated.

SEAWORK 2006, A RESOUNDING SUCCESS.

We sailed our pilot boat Glean Mor to Southampton to be exhibited at the Seawork 2006 show in June. Typically, and you could have put money on it, after a spell of fine sunny weather for three weeks, the weekend we were to sail across to England it was blowing a gale. We were due to sail over on the Saturday, but it was blowing force 7, we hoped it would be better on Sunday, so we waited a day longer. Typically on Sunday it increased to force 8! We had no choice in it, she had to go, so at 5am she sailed out in force 8. They had heavy seas off the st/bd bow and had to reduce speed to 17kts, where she just punched through it all with never a moment of concern, even though during a bout of seasickness by one crew member, whilst standing on the deck by the transom railing he found himself up to his knees in water, as she was swept by a big breaking wave. The sea state was particularly bad at lands end with confused seas in the headlands tidal race. Mick Mc Carthy, the port of Corks Harbour Master was skipper for the voyage, considering the voyage the best pre commissioning sea trial possible. He took the helm for almost the whole leg of this voyage and through the worst conditions and said “the boat handle faultlessly, there was never even one moment when I felt anything but complete confidence in her sea keeping, and although conditions were at times stressful and uncomfortable, we all felt completely safe”

The show was a resounding success, we had probably the best position in the show, right below the entrance gangway, which showed off  Glean Mors’s graceful lines. Every one was hugly impreseed by her massive frames and strength, whilst a 42” plasma screen playing video footage of her in storm force conditions impressed everyone.
